Portugal
Another white wine in the range from Bairrada, but this time from the grape called Maria Gomes. This variety is found elsewhere in Portugal under the synonym of Fernão Pires. Known for its floral quality, Maria Gomes is difficult to work with, and those who are able to “get it right,” like Luís does, get a gold star in my book.
The soil that this Maria Gomes is planted in is also clay, but here with blue marl. One-third of the wine goes into a lagar (open-top granite tank) on its skin. Everything is then pressed and fermented in barrel.
The nose of this wine is beautiful, with the floral and jasmine notes wafting from the glass, alongside hints of orange peel and spice. This has a beautiful texture, with nice freshness, and just a hint of structure at the end. This could fall into the orange wine category, but Luís shows a touch of brilliance by only macerating one-third of the wine on the skins. A very dynamic wine!
